1. Observe the appearance

1. Overall shape

When choosing saltwater mushrooms, first observe their overall shape. High-quality saltwater mushrooms should maintain a relatively complete shape without obvious breakage or incompleteness. Suppose the shape of the mushrooms is incomplete. In that case, it may be damaged during processing or transportation, which will not only affect the appearance but also cause it to deteriorate more easily.

At the same time, pay attention to whether the size of the mushrooms is uniform. Mushrooms of uniform size usually mean that they have been strictly screened during the production process, and the quality is more guaranteed.

2. Color

Normal saltwater mushrooms should have a natural and uniform color. Generally speaking, fresh saltwater mushrooms are milky white or light yellow, and there should be no obvious discoloration or spots. If the color of the mushrooms is too dark or too light, or there are abnormal colors such as black spots and green spots, it may be of poor quality or have deteriorated.

Observe whether the surface of the mushrooms is shiny. Shiny mushrooms usually indicate that they are fresher, while mushrooms that have lost their luster may have been stored for a long time.

2. Check the texture

1. Elasticity

Gently press the saltwater mushrooms to feel their texture and elasticity. High-quality salted mushrooms should have a certain elasticity and can quickly recover after being pressed. If the mushrooms are not easy to recover after being pressed or feel soft and rotten, it means that they may not be fresh or damaged.

Be careful not to press too hard to avoid damaging the structure of the mushrooms.

2. Moisture

It is also important to check the moisture of the mushrooms. Salted mushrooms should be kept moderately moist, but not too wet or with obvious water accumulation. If the mushrooms are too wet, it may cause bacteria to grow and shorten their shelf life; while mushrooms that are too dry may not taste good.

You can touch the surface of the mushrooms gently with your hands to feel its moisture. If you feel obvious water seepage, or the surface of the mushrooms feels sticky, it means that the moisture is too high.

3. Smell

1. Normal smell

High-quality salted mushrooms should have a light mushroom aroma and no peculiar smell. If you smell abnormal odors such as pungent odors, sour odors, and moldy odors, it means that the mushrooms may have deteriorated or been contaminated.

When smelling the odor, you can bring the mushroom close to your nose and inhale gently. Be careful not to put your nose directly to the mushroom to avoid inhaling too much salt or other impurities.

2. Chemical odor

Some unscrupulous merchants may use chemical additives to extend the shelf life of saltwater mushrooms or improve their appearance. Therefore, be alert to whether the mushrooms have chemical odors, such as the smell of medicine, bleaching powder, etc. If you smell these abnormal odors, you should avoid buying them.

4. Check the packaging

1. Packaging integrity

When selecting saltwater mushrooms, pay attention to checking the integrity of the packaging. The packaging should be intact, leak-free, and well-sealed. If the packaging is damaged, the mushrooms may be contaminated by the outside world, affecting their quality and safety.

At the same time, check whether the label information on the packaging is complete, including production date, shelf life, manufacturer, ingredient list, etc. This information can help you understand the source and quality of the mushrooms.

2. Shelf life
Pay attention to checking the shelf life of saltwater mushrooms. Choose products within the shelf life to ensure their freshness and safety. If the purchased mushrooms are close to the shelf life, they should be eaten as soon as possible to avoid expiration and deterioration.

You can also judge the freshness of mushrooms by the production date. The closer the production date, the fresher the mushrooms.
